How to Write a Nurse Resume

Short answer: your nursing resume should clearly showcase your clinical expertise, compassionate care, and measurable impact on patient outcomes.

Start with a polished header, followed by a concise, compelling summary that highlights your healthcare skills, clinical achievements, and qualifications. Structure your work experience to emphasize your ability to improve patient care, collaborate with others, and handle high-pressure situations.

Round out your resume with education, certifications, and key skills. Consider adding additional sections for specialized procedures, quality improvement initiatives, or leadership roles.

Include all the necessary sections

Here’s the standard order of sections for most nurse resumes:

  • Header with contact information
  • Resume summary or objective
  • Work experience
  • Education
  • Certifications (RN, BLS, ACLS, PALS, specialty credentials)
  • Skills

Depending on your current career situation, you can also throw in some additional sections. For instance:

  • Specialized procedures or patient populations
  • Awards and recognitions
  • Leadership roles or hospital committees
  • Volunteer experience in healthcare settings

Make every section count. Keep it concise, and if a piece of information isn’t pivotal, leave it off.

Limit the resume to one page if you can, but for more experienced nurses with a longer or more intricate history, a two-page resume is fine.

Recommended guides:

Create a professional resume header

Start with your name and contact information. Include:

  • Your first and last name
  • Phone number
  • Professional email address
  • Location (city and country)
  • LinkedIn profile

Below your name, clearly state your professional title (e.g., Primary Care Nurse). This sets the tone and instantly tells recruiters what you do.

For more information, see: How to Create a Resume Header

Describe your work history

Use reverse-chronological order, starting with your most recent position.

For each entry, include:

  • Job title
  • Company name
  • Location
  • Dates of employment

For each job, include 3–7 bullet points that detail exactly what you did and how, followed by the outcome. Use strong action verbs and numbers when possible (e.g., ““Trained 15 new nurses on Epic charting best practices”).

If you’ve worked with specific hospital systems, technology, or earned relevant certifications at your workplace (like Epic, Cerner, ACLS, or charge nurse leadership), sprinkle them in. This not only reinforces your expertise but also helps your resume get past applicant tracking systems (ATS) — the hiring software most hospitals use to scan resumes for relevant skills.

Recommended guides:

List your degrees and detail professional learning in healthcare

Use an education section to outline your academic qualifications. Here’s how:

  • List your highest degree first, followed by your university name.
  • If you’re newer to nursing, add relevant coursework, projects, or academic achievements that showcase your skills.
  • For certifications, include RN, BLS, ACLS, PALS, and any specialty credentials.

Recommended guides:

List your most relevant nursing skills in the skills section

Here’s how to approach the skills section of a resume:

  • Showcase a mix of technical nursing skills and patient care expertise. Include key tools, frameworks, or technologies that you’re proficient in.
  • For soft skills, emphasize leadership, communication, and adaptability—these are essential in any nursing role.
  • You can categorize your skills into “Clinical Skills” and “Soft Skills”, or list them together, depending on your preference. Just make sure they align with the job description.

Need ideas? Here are key skills to feature on a nursing resume:

Clinical skills:

  • Patient assessment & monitoring (vital signs, triage, symptom evaluation)
  • Medication administration (IV therapy, injections, oral meds)
  • Wound care & post-surgical management
  • Electronic Health Records (EHR) proficiency (Epic, Cerner, Meditech)
  • Emergency response & crisis intervention
  • Specialized procedures (ventilator management, telemetry monitoring, catheterization)
  • Patient & family education (discharge planning, chronic disease management)
  • Multilingual communication (Fluent in [Languages], medical terminology proficiency)

Soft skills:

  • Critical thinking & problem-solving
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration (working with physicians, therapists, case managers)
  • Time management & prioritization
  • Communication & bedside manner
  • Adaptability & resilience
  • Leadership & teamwork
  • Patient advocacy & compassion

Use additional sections as further proof of your fit

Adding extra sections to your nurse resume shows dedication, expertise, and a commitment to excellence. These sections can highlight your leadership, professional growth, and specialized skills beyond standard job experience, helping your resume stand out in a competitive field.

Some ideas to help set your nursing resume apart:

  • Professional associations. Demonstrating membership in organizations like the American Nurses Association (ANA), Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), or Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing shows ongoing commitment to the field and professional development.
  • Certifications and special training. If you have advanced certifications beyond the basics (e.g., CCRN for critical care nurses, CEN for emergency nurses, or OCN for oncology nurses), listing them in their own section adds credibility to your expertise.
  • Publications and thought leadership. Have you written an article for a nursing journal, blog, or association newsletter? Whether you’ve contributed to a patient education resource, research paper, or a guide on best practices, showcasing published work demonstrates leadership and knowledge-sharing.
  • Conferences and workshops. Whether you’ve attended, spoken at, or helped organize a major nursing conference (e.g., Magnet Conference, AORN Global Surgical Conference, AACN National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Expo), listing these experiences reinforces your engagement with current trends and innovations in healthcare.
  • Volunteer work and community involvement. If you’ve volunteered for medical mission trips, community health screenings, or free clinics, this section can highlight your dedication beyond the bedside and showcase your ability to connect with diverse patient populations.

Recommended resources:

Highlight the most relevant information in a resume summary

Once you’ve completed all those sections of your nursing resume, it’s time to review it in its entirety.

Zero in on the most impactful details and craft them into a clear, results-driven summary. This section sits right below your contact details, and functions as your personal mission statement. It should be concise, compelling, and immediately communicate your expertise as a nurse.

  • Keep it short and powerful. In 3–4 sentences, your nurse resume summary should highlight your key strengths, clinical experience, and biggest achievements in patient care. This is your chance to answer, “Why am I the best nurse for this role?”
  • Make it impact-driven. Use language that showcases your ability to improve patient outcomes, streamline workflows, and provide compassionate, high-quality care. Tailor it to the job description to ensure your strengths align with what the hospital or healthcare facility needs.

Note: If you’re just starting out, consider using a resume objective instead.

Example nurse resume summary:
“Compassionate and detail-oriented Registered Nurse with 5+ years of experience delivering high-quality patient care in fast-paced hospital settings. Skilled in patient assessment, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration to improve health outcomes. Adept at handling high-acuity cases in emergency and med-surg units while ensuring patient advocacy and comfort remain top priorities.”

Feeling stuck? That’s completely normal. Writing about yourself can feel harder than charting a complex case.

For finishing touches, make sure your resume looks professional

  • Keep your resume clean and easy to read. We know nurses love efficiency, so stick with a professional resume font, consistent formatting, and clear headings. Skip the fancy designs — they can confuse hiring managers and trip up applicant tracking systems (ATS).
  • Find the right balance between detail and simplicity. If you’re just starting out, keep it to one page. If you’re a seasoned nurse with years of experience, two pages are fine—but every bullet point should add value.
  • Finally, double-check the job description to make sure you’ve included relevant resume keywords. These help you get past ATS filters and land your resume in front of a real recruiter or nurse manager. If you don’t want to manually tweak your resume for every job posting, use Rezi AI Keyword Targeting to automate the process.

What Makes Nurse Resumes Different

In short: nurse resumes need to showcase clinical expertise and the direct impact of nursing care on patient outcomes. It’s crucial to emphasize that you have the medical skills and healthcare knowledge to successfully help patients. It’s also crucial to prove that you can work in high-pressure environments and cooperate with others.

Employers typically seek evidence of your judgment in emergencies, adaptability to changing patient conditions, and your capacity to collaborate effectively with diverse healthcare teams.

Additionally, strong nurse resumes emphasize specific certifications, clinical specializations, and experiences directly tied to improved patient safety, care quality, and outcomes—elements uniquely valued in healthcare hiring.

Blend of clinical expertise and patient-centered care

Hiring managers want proof that you don’t just complete tasks — you improve patient outcomes and contribute to a stronger healthcare team. Show how your clinical skills make a tangible difference.

What it means for you:

  • Quantify your achievements wherever possible. Instead of “Provided patient care,” say, “Managed care for 15+ post-op patients per shift, reducing average recovery time by 10%.”
  • Highlight challenges you’ve solved, e.g., “Implemented a new pain management protocol that improved patient satisfaction scores by 25%.”
  • Demonstrate how your skills translate into better care, whether it’s improving medication adherence, streamlining discharge planning, or enhancing patient education.

Demonstrate impact on patient care, hospital efficiency, or team collaboration

As a nurse, you’re more than a caregiver — you’re a problem solver, patient advocate, and key player in healthcare systems.

What it means for you:

  • Showcase your technical fluency — mention expertise in Epic, Cerner, or other EHR systems, along with specific clinical procedures or certifications that strengthen your qualifications.
  • Share how you’ve used your knowledge to improve workflows, enhance patient safety, or train other nurses on best practices.
  • Prove your ability to align hospital goals with patient needs, whether it’s reducing readmissions, increasing efficiency in triage, or improving patient education initiatives.

Expertise in high-pressure environments and interdisciplinary collaboration

Nurses don’t work in silos; you coordinate care across multiple teams, departments, and specialties. Your resume should reflect your ability to communicate effectively, prioritize tasks, and adapt in dynamic healthcare settings.

What it means for you:

  • Highlight leadership moments; whether you’ve precepted new nurses, taken charge in emergencies, or led quality improvement initiatives — make this known.
  • Include examples of how you’ve worked with physicians, therapists, case managers, and specialists to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Showcase collaboration: anything from managing a rapid response situation to improving discharge planning or developing patient education materials that enhanced outcomes.

Summary

Let’s recap on how to write a nurse resume:

  • Structure. Format your nursing resume with essential sections in this order: Header, Resume Summary or Objective, Work Experience, Education, Certifications, and Skills. Consider adding optional sections like Specialized Procedures, Professional Affiliations, or Volunteer Experience to strengthen your application.
  • Nurse Resume Summary. Write a concise, compelling summary that highlights your clinical expertise, patient care skills, and measurable contributions to healthcare. Think: improving patient outcomes, streamlining workflows, or leading quality improvement initiatives. Tailor this section to align with the specific job description and hospital goals.
  • Work Experience. Use reverse-chronological order and focus on achievements, not just tasks. Use action verbs and metrics where possible—whether that’s reducing hospital readmissions, training new nurses, or increasing patient satisfaction scores. If relevant, highlight your EHR proficiency (Epic, Cerner, Meditech) or specialized skills such as IV therapy, telemetry, or triage.
  • Education. Include your highest nursing degree (BSN, ADN, MSN, DNP) and any relevant coursework, clinical rotations, or research projects. If you're mid-to-senior level, keep this section brief; if you're entry-level, highlight relevant academic experiences and externships.
  • Certifications. Feature key credentials such as RN, BLS, ACLS, PALS, CCRN, or CEN to reinforce your qualifications. Specialized certifications (e.g., OCN for oncology, TNCC for trauma, or CPN for pediatrics) can further set you apart.
  • Skills. Showcase a mix of technical, clinical nursing skills and patient care expertise. Highlight key areas like patient assessment, medication administration, wound care, emergency response, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Include soft skills such as communication, critical thinking, and leadership.
  • Extras. Consider adding sections like “Professional Associations,” “Specialized Training,” or “Leadership Roles.” These can help emphasize ongoing education, mentorship experience, or contributions to hospital-wide initiatives.
  • Formatting. Keep your resume clean, professional, and ATS-friendly with clear headings and bullet points. Stick to one page if you’re entry-level; an experienced nursing resume can extend to two pages if every word adds value.

FAQ

How do I list clinical rotations or externships on my nursing resume?

If you're a new graduate nurse or have limited work experience, listing clinical rotations and externships can strengthen your resume. Include:

  • The hospital or facility name
  • The unit or specialty (e.g., ICU, Med-Surg, Pediatrics)
  • Dates of your rotation
  • Key skills gained (e.g., patient assessments, medication administration, electronic health record (EHR) documentation)

Place this under “Clinical Experience” or “Relevant Experience” rather than “Work Experience” if it was part of your education.

What’s the best way to describe travel nursing experience on my resume?

Travel nurses should highlight adaptability, quick learning, and diverse clinical skills. To structure this effectively:

  • List each assignment separately under “Work Experience” or group them under one employer (your staffing agency)
  • Include hospital names, locations, and contract dates
  • Emphasize specialized skills, patient populations, and unit types
  • Showcase measurable results, such as reducing patient wait times or training new staff

What should I include in a new grad nurse resume if I have no experience?

New grad nurse resumes should focus on education, clinical rotations, and transferable skills:

  • A strong summary statement emphasizing enthusiasm, adaptability, and patient care skills
  • Clinical rotations listed under a “Clinical Experience” section
  • Relevant coursework, simulations, and certifications (e.g., BLS, ACLS)
  • Volunteer work or healthcare-related customer service experience that demonstrates teamwork and communication

How do I highlight my certifications (RN, BLS, ACLS, PALS) effectively?

Place RN licenses and certifications in a dedicated section labeled "Certifications & Licenses" near the top or bottom of your resume.

  • Always list RN first, followed by other active certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS, CCRN, CEN, etc.)
  • Include expiration dates if required by the employer
  • Mention certifications within your work experience section when applicable (e.g., “Administered ACLS interventions in a high-acuity setting”)

How do I format a resume for an LPN to RN transition?

For nurses transitioning from LPN to RN, emphasize:

  • Your RN license and expanded scope of practice
  • Additional clinical training, leadership responsibilities, or patient care advancements
  • A separate section for “Certifications & Licenses,” listing both LPN and RN credentials
  • Work experience showing progression in skills, autonomy, and responsibilities

If you worked as an LPN while completing your RN program, make sure your LPN to RN resume highlights education and clinical rotations to show your growth.

How can I tailor my resume for Med-Surg, ICU, ER, or Telehealth nursing jobs?

For each specialty, adjust your resume to highlight the most relevant skills and experience:

  • Med-Surg: Emphasize multitasking, patient education, and chronic disease management.
  • ICU: Focus on critical care skills, rapid assessments, and high-acuity patient management.
  • ER: Showcase triage, crisis management, and experience handling trauma cases.
  • Telehealth: Highlight remote assessments, patient education, and experience with digital health platforms.

How do I make my nursing resume stand out to applicant tracking systems (ATS)?

Many hospitals and healthcare facilities use ATS to scan resumes for relevant keywords before they reach a hiring manager. To improve your chances:

  • Use exact phrasing from the job description, including terms like registered nurse, patient care, clinical experience, and specialized nursing areas such as med-surg, ICU, or telehealth.
  • List technical skills like electronic health records (EHR) systems such as Epic, Cerner, or Meditech, along with specialized procedures like IV therapy, telemetry, and triage.
  • Keep formatting simple — avoid images, graphics, and fancy fonts that might confuse ATS software.
  • Use standard section headings like "Work Experience," "Education," and "Certifications" to ensure proper parsing.
  • Include high-impact nursing keywords listed on the target job description, such as patient assessment, medication administration, IV therapy, wound care, post-surgical care, emergency response, crisis management, critical care nursing, triage, symptom evaluation, telemetry monitoring, ventilator management, infection control and prevention, pain management, discharge planning, patient education, care coordination, patient advocacy, interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural competency in healthcare, and nursing education.

I uploaded my application to various websites like Indeed, LinkedIn, places like that, and I was not getting anything that was in the field that I wanted to be in. I put my information in rezi, and I was able to reorganize my experiences and come up with better bullet points for some of my volunteer experiences that were in that field. And now in the past week I've had like five interviews, and I was able to secure a part time job doing something in that field.
For some reason, I struggled a lot with choosing a format for my resume, and then managing that format when I wanted to make updates. With Rezi, I was able to simply input data, check out the preview, and know that it will be formatted correctly when I export the resume to Word. Rezi made it super easy to refine and iterate on my resume. There are alot of options for resume writing, and if you are reading this on the fence about whether to try Rezi, just do it. A simple, fast, well-designed resume tool.
Rezi is now the only place I edit my resume (I've ditched the Word doc I used to use), and I honestly believe that using Rezi has allowed me to create a much better resume than I would have on my own. I intend to keep using it and experimenting more with the AI generation for customizing the resume to different jobs.
Some difficulties that I faced when creating a resume, initially was formatting. Another feature that I've actually found myself using more often than I expected was the professional resume reviews. Other options that I tried in the past, some like, free alternatives. Some of them wouldn't let you say your resume or came with some unexpected strings, but Rezi is super upfront and continues to improve over time. I've recommended Rezi to several of my friends and colleagues who will continue to do so. I just love this product so much.
Not a paid promo. I've been looking for a change of jobs for almost a year. Got a few calls, but nothing what I wanted. Updated my CV through Rezi, the second call I got was from an MNC and something I was looking forward to. And here I am, completing my second month at the new place. I checked with my HR how she found me - it was through the Rezi cv (I had to check because I used to apply with my old CVs as well)Thank you, Rezi. Thank you, Jacob! Yes the UI, formatting, keyword suggestions etc are all great but the best of all - dedicated customer service.
... I created a few primary versions of my resume and then would copy them and use Rezi to suggest content for each job description. Rezi was helpful by comparing my resume to the job description and making suggestions for extra keywords. Using Rezi for this instead of doing it myself reduced my time per application from 1-2 hours down to 15 minutes. The response I got from applications with targeted resumes and cover letters using Rezi was high.
Rezi has been instrumental in a job search I've participated in in two specific instances. Number one, as my own personal resume customization tool. Searching through thousands of different job descriptions as an MBA student, Rezi really helped me reinforce my resume or customize my resume for the job descriptions I thought were most important. And was a great support tool on top of what I already received as a part of a full time MBA program.
UI: Firstly, the UI is a breeze. It's real fun to use, and what I like most is the fact that the application divides your resume into different sections, and you get to work on each section at a time. Psychologically, this helps you alleviate anxiety and just work on one thing at a time.
Formatting: Trying to format your resume on Google Docs or MS Word or even Latex can be a hassle more often than not. REZI.AI does your formatting like a charm. There's a handful of nifty features like the auto-tune (which automatically adjusts stuff), borders, accent colors and others.
ATS Scoring: This is perhaps the USP of REZI. You can target a resume for a job description and view the score corresponding to that particular application.
I've used many different resume building webistes, all of them ended up wanting more and more money. Rezi on the otherhand has the lifetime option which allows a good taste of what it could do. But overall it is nice and clear what I am supposed to do and love the PDF download option. Not many templates but they are all simple and to the point. Thank you for creating and offering this as a service!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why would I use an AI resume maker?

An AI resume maker helps you build a resume perfectly fit for the job you want. Top-notch AI resume builders are designed to speak the language hiring managers are looking for, increasing your chances of standing out in the crowd. It aligns your skills and experience with the job description effectively.

What’s the best way to use an AI resume builder?

To get the most out of an AI resume builder, either start from scratch or upload your current resume. Fill in as much detail as possible about your career and skills, and upload the job description you’re targeting. This personalization allows the AI to build a unique and tailored resume that’s bound to catch potential employers' attention.

Aren’t all resumes written with AI super similar?

AI-generated resumes can seem similar if you're not giving personalized inputs or if you're using basic prompts. Provide specific details about your work experience and target the job you’re eyeing. Use specialized AI tools instead of general chatbots to avoid robotic-sounding resumes and to ensure individual creativity.

Will employers know I used AI to write a resume?

Employers might think you used AI, but that’s rarely an issue. What they really care about is getting a well-written resume that showcases your skills and experiences accurately. A top-notch resume tailored to their needs will speak volumes more than worrying about AI involvement.

Can I use AI to optimize an existing resume?

Yes, using AI to optimize your current resume is highly effective. You just need to upload your resume, share details about your career goals and the job you want, and let the AI refine everything to elevate your resume's impact and ATS compatibility.

How does Rezi tailor my resume to specific job descriptions?

Rezi uses a tool called the AI Keyword Targeting. This feature scans the job description to identify crucial keywords and naturally incorporates them into your resume, giving it the right focus without keyword stuffing.

What is the role of ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) in the AI resume-building process?

ATS systems are software that many employers use to screen resumes. AI resume builders, like Rezi, are created to help you bypass these systems by ensuring your resume is ATS-friendly. ATS compatibility is a priority at Rezi to make sure your resume gets noticed by human eyes.

Can Rezi help with cover letters too?

Yes, it certainly can! Rezi creates highly personalized cover letters that match both your resume and the job description, boosting your application.

How can I ensure my AI-generated resume passes ATS scanning?

Stick with reputable AI resume builders, use clean and simple formatting, and ensure the right keywords are included. These steps help your resume glide through ATS scanning smoothly.

What should I do if my AI-generated resume feels too generic?

Ensure you provide enough personalized information about yourself to the AI tool. If it's still not right, explore a different AI tool until you get the customized feel you want.

Does Rezi offer industry-specific templates?
