How to make a cover letter that meets hiring standards

1. Use the standard cover letter layout

These are the basic guidelines for a well-formatted cover letter:

  • Use a classic, readable font like Arial, Helvetica, or Merriweather. Make sure it’s consistent with your resume.
  • Keep the font size between 10–12 pt.
  • Set 1-inch margins on all sides for a balanced layout.
  • Set line spacing to 1 or 1.15.
  • Make sure text is left-aligned. 

2. Write a strong opening 

Address the hiring manager formally by their name, e.g., “Dear Mr. Jones.” If you don’t know their name, simply greet them with “Dear Hiring Manager.” 

Next, start your cover letter by introducing yourself. State the position you’re applying for, and briefly mention key skills and unique qualities or strengths. Summarize how and why you’re a great fit. You can also mention how you came across the job opportunity, especially when it’s from a referral. 

3. Highlight relevant skills, qualifications, and achievements

Clarify how you’re qualified for the role throughout the main body of your cover letter. At the same time, showcase personality by focusing on specific experiences that demonstrate your value and interests. Avoid providing generic lists and repeating your resume. 

4. Clarify how you can individually contribute and address specific company needs

Connect your unique strengths with the company’s goals or challenges. Highlight how your background matches what the company is looking for and how you have the skills or qualities to succeed in the role. 

5. Keep the tone formal and positive

Stick to a formal tone that’s respectful and positive throughout. 

The only exception to this is if you’re applying to a company with a more relaxed and casual environment, where matching their tone of voice is preferred.

6. Conclude by thanking the reader and signing off

To finish your cover letter, wrap up with a polite thank you for their consideration. Next, express eagerness to discuss the role further. 

End with an appropriate closing phrase, such as “Sincerely,” followed by your signature.
