How to Write a Medical Assistant Resume

Short answer: 

When crafting your medical assistant resume, opt for the reverse-chronological format to highlight your recent experience and career growth. Start with a clear header and contact details, then focus on showcasing your work experience with strong action verbs to impress both ATS scanners and recruiters. Emphasize specific achievements and results to stand out from other candidates. Include relevant certifications, like CMA or CCMA, and don't stress if you lack a college degree — highlight your specialized training and skills instead. End with a compelling summary at the top of your resume to tie everything together. 

Use the reverse-chronological resume format 

Choosing the right structure for your resume is the first step in getting noticed. Recruiters are sifting through stacks of resumes every day. Will they focus on the one with an organized and familiar format or the one that looks more like an art project than a resume?

My go-to is the reverse-chronological resume format — it makes it easy for recruiters to find your information while spotlighting your strengths. This popular structure puts your work experience front and center, starting with your most recent job and working backward to show your career trajectory. 

Here’s how the reverse-chronological format will look for your medical assistant resume: 

  • Header with contact information
  • Resume summary or objective
  • Work experience
  • Education
  • Skills
  • Certifications
  • Any additional sections

Don’t have a solid professional background? No problem. You can fill that work experience section with hands-on training, internships, volunteer work, or externships. 

You can also switch it up by placing your education section before your experience to emphasize your qualifications and training right off the bat. Include relevant certifications and courses that highlight your medical knowledge and skills.

If you don’t have much work experience, you might have been told to try other structures, like the skills-based format — but I’d generally avoid going down this route. Other formats simply aren’t as familiar to recruiters or Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), so it can tricker for them to quickly find key details in your resume. 

Here’s an overview of why you should generally avoid other formats: 

  • Functional (skills-based) format. The functional format focuses on your skills, often appealing to those with limited experience or work history gaps. However, this format doesn’t perform well with ATS scanners and will usually only be seen if you send it directly to a human reader. Plus, by placing your work experience further down, recruiters may think you have something to hide. 
  • Hybrid (combination) format. Blending the two formats can work if you want to focus on a wide range of skills while still including a dedicated work experience section. Only consider this format if you have extensive work experience or many technical and medical skills you want to highlight.

Include a header and contact information

Your resume header and contact information are the first things recruiters see and the key to getting a call back — lucky for you, this part isn’t rocket science. 

Here’s a breakdown of what to include: 

  • Full name. Make sure your name stands out by making it a slightly larger font than the rest of your resume. 
  • Profession. Under your name, add your professional title, like “Certified Medical Assistant”. This immediately tells the employer who you are and your expertise. 
  • Address. Simply include your city and state, no need for your complete address.
  • Phone number and email address. Avoid old email accounts, like “funnybunny@gmail.com” – keep it professional, like “jane.doe@gmail.com.” 
  • Websites. Add your LinkedIn profile and make sure it’s updated with your latest experience and skills. You can also add an online portfolio or a personal website if it’s relevant to the role.

Focus on your work experience

Your work experience is the star of the show on your resume. This section reveals your skills, professional background, and potential in a new company. You want to show employers that you’ve got a solid track record of positively impacting both teams and patients in medical settings. 

But you’re one of fifty candidates with similar experiences — so how do you make sure yours leaves a lasting impression?

A simple trick to getting noticed is by using strong action verbs like “administered,” “coordinated,” or “assisted” to catch the eye of the ATS scanners and impress recruiters. ATS scans for specific keywords, so use similar terms to those in the job description. Just don’t parrot the job ad exactly — authenticity is key.

Now for the number one rule — focus on your positive impact. You could easily say, “Interacted with patients” on your resume. But even I could take a quick trip to the hospital and have a good chat. Be specific and focus on results. Instead, you could say, “Explained treatment plans and procedures to patients to help them feel more at ease.” 

Recruiters don’t just want to see a generic list of duties. They want to know how you overcame challenges and found successes, whether big or small — it tells them what you can bring in your new role.

Quantifying your achievements can make a big difference. Instead of saying you “assisted in patient care,” try something like “assisted in the care of 30+ patients daily, improving patient satisfaction scores by 15%.” See the difference? Numbers make your accomplishments tangible and show your real-life impact. 

Are your work experience and professional achievements lacking? You can still make an impression. Include internships, externships, or any volunteer work that shows skills relevant to the role. 

If you’ve shadowed a doctor or volunteered at a clinic, mention specific tasks or duties. For example, “I shadowed a physician to gain hands-on experience in patient examinations and electronic health record management.” Even if you haven’t been paid, this experience is valuable as it shows your willingness to learn and grow.

Outline your education and qualifications

Unlike the doctors and medical teams you support, you don’t necessarily need a college degree to become a medical assistant. Many employers are happy to accept candidates with a high school diploma, specialized training, and certifications, like the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential.

So, don’t worry about your education section suffering due to not including a college education, especially if it’s not mentioned in the job description. However, make sure you include your high school diploma, GED, online programs, necessary certificates, or trade school training. 

For those with a formal education, start with the basics: list the names of any degrees you’ve earned, the institutions where you studied, and your graduation dates.

Having a college degree isn’t necessary for many medical assistants, and some of you may be transitioning from other fields with degrees that aren’t relevant to the position. 

But certifications hold a lot of weight — and in many cases, they are a requirement. You can list them under education, but if you’ve got a bunch, give them their own section on your resume to really shine. 

Check the job description and start with the certifications necessary for your position. Remember, recruiters are in skim mode, so make it easy for them to spot the essentials. Common certifications include Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), and Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).

You can also include a Specialty Certified Medical Assistant (SCMA) certification if you want to work in specific healthcare units like oncology or pediatrics. And don’t forget the basics like CPR and First Aid — they’re essential in any medical setting.

If you’ve received any awards or recognition for your work, consider adding an awards and achievements section. This can support your soft skills and highlight your dedication and excellence in the field. For example, include any feedback for outstanding patient care as it tells employers you’re committed and have great communication skills.

Include hard and soft skills 

Medical assistants have a unique blend of hard and soft skills. One minute, you’re comforting a patient, and the next, you’re measuring vital signs or giving injections.

While both sets of skills need to shine through your experiences, certifications, and education sections, you should also include a small skills section to summarize your abilities. This makes it easier for ATS scanners and recruiters to quickly check off those requirement boxes. 

But don’t just dump any old skill into this section — details matter. Start by looking at the job description and pick out relevant skills that match your experience.
